Every Week: Read 20 minutes 5 nights per week. You may read some each night or you may spend a couple hours reading on one night...but make your total reading time equal a minimum of 100 minutes. Most of the time you may read a book of your own choosing.

Every other week, you must write one full page in your Readers Notebook about your reading. Entries may include discussion of the characters, setting, tone, theme... or anything about the book that you would like to write about. You may include sketches in your notebook too. Entries may be about our class novel or your free reading choice. These will be graded and make up a good portion of your quarterly grade. When you turn your notebook in before the tardy bell on its due date, you will receive a ticket that can be used to enter drawings for prizes at the end of each quarter.

The second part of the Reader's Notebook entry is comprised of 2 pages of writing. You must write 2 pages every 2 weeks about anything that is important to you. You may write stories, letters, newspaper articles, reports, songs, poems...the list is endless. Just write. You do not have to do all of your writing on one night. Spread it out! The 2 pages can be a collection of short writings or one long writing. You decide.

Lastly, the third part of your grade will come from the poem you find and put into your notebook. You must glue it in your notebook and write a paragraph explaining why you chose this poem. You may write the poem yourself or hand copy it if necessary. Only one poem each month is required.

The criteria above are a minimum. You may always do more than the required amount of writing.

Educationally Yours,
Mrs. Hoffman
